A lot of questions have been raised about the use of shock collars for dogs. How are they administered, for example? What are the side effects?
The purpose of the shock collar is to make a dog more obedient. One of the ways in which this can be done is through what is known as dog crate training. This is when you bring your dog into a room and offer it a treat.
The dog will be able to sit, stay or lie down all on its own, but if you then place him in a crate it will become obedient because it will think it is safe and being taken care of.
Shock collars are not used for dog crate training.
They are generally used when the dog has been naughty or misbehaved and punishment must be applied immediately. If you want to discipline your dog then you should use positive techniques rather than using the shock collar.
The main side effect that occurs when the shock collar is used is pain. The shock doesn't just come from the collar. There is also a spring attached to the collar. So if you are using the collar in order to stop the dog from doing something that it shouldn't then it is likely to cause pain.
This will, obviously, apply if you find yourself using the collar to punish a dog for getting into its normal place of sleep. This, of course, is not a very good idea. The collar should only be used as a last resort if all else has failed.
Of course, in the first place, you should never use the collar on your own dog. It is a very cruel thing to do. And secondly, the collar can cause damage to the nerves of the dog if you try to use it in an improper way.
If you are looking for a way to reward your dog then try using the collar, not as a reward but as a correction.
Take a look at how it is supposed to work. In this instance, the collar works by making the dog sit or stay.
After the dog has sat down it is allowed to stand up again. At this point, the collar again stops the dog from standing up and the shock is applied.
The purpose of this is to make the dog sit and in doing so, teach the dog that it is not allowed to stand up.
Once the dog has mastered the trick it can stand up without the collar but it must be reminded that it can't stand up and move freely around its home. Again, it is only used as a last resort in keeping a dog from being too active.
This is to prevent injury to the dog and the possibility of attack by other dogs.
Despite the fact that the shock collar can cause injury to your dog if used in the wrong way, there are some conditions under which it is appropriate to use it.
One of these is if the dog is in need of discipline. In the case of a puppy, this should be used in conjunction with training the puppy so that it learns to do what it was trained to do.
It is also perfectly alright to use the dog's collar for training puppies but to only use it as a punishment after the puppy has learnt the trick. In this way, the puppy gets used to obeying orders.
After the puppy has worked out all of the problems with the collar it can be used any time as a good form of training.
Some dog owners also swear by using the collar with the shock tare but there are other reasons why some people think that this method is harmful. It should be used with care to prevent injury to the dog and to avoid unnecessary stress on both the dog and the owner.
